PRESS
RELEASE ON THE RACINO
The
Executive Council of the Federation of Labour is calling upon the
provincial government to enact an immediate moratorium on the Racino
while a study on the social and economic impacts the Racino would have
on the population of P.E.I. takes place. “The P.E.I.
government is investing our hard earned tax money into this scheme and
gambling is an addiction that has major social implications for
individuals, their families and whole communities,” states Carl Pursey,
P.E.I. Federation of Labour President.
Gambling is addictive and people are losing their homes, savings and
having family difficulties. The social costs associated with
the results of gambling (family dislocation, theft, bankruptcy, family
violence, loss of employment, depression and even suicide) are going to
be borne either by the provincial government through social programs or
by Island families.
This consultation will ensure that the public will be consulted and
informed on this issue and then the province should conduct a
provincial plebiscite regarding the future of the Racino
proposal.
Carl Pursey, President, P.E.I. Federation of Labour calls upon the
provincial government to “let the public know all the costs associated
with this proposal and begin this study immediately.”
