Letter to the Editor On Changes to the Island Ambulance System
On April 1, 2006, ambulance services on PEI will radically change. The PEI Federation
of Labour hopes that the Binns government will make sure it is a positive change.
We cannot understand the government’s insistence in moving ambulance
services to a monopoly private system when moving it into the public
system would not only be a lot more efficient but also make a lot more
sense.
A public ambulance system would be:
■ more cost effective,
■ more responsive to the needs of its clients
■ more responsive to the training needs of its employees
■ more likely to invest in new equipment as need arises
■ more likely to provide for clear lines of accountability for Island taxpayers
■ and easily integrated into the existing administrative framework
It has always been the federation’s position that our publically
funded services like our ambulance system should be based on a model
that places serving the public first and not on a business model that
places profitability above all else. We hope that the Binns Government
will realize this and decide to implement a system that puts Islanders
first, a Public Ambulance System, in
April.
Yours Sincerely,
Carl Pursey,
President of the PEI Federation of Labour
