Making Workers’ Voices
Heard Theme of the PEI Federation of Labour’s 43rd Annual Convention
“In an era where governments are more and more willing to sign trade
agreements that allow corporate greed to take precedent over public
interest; where the basic human rights of workers, including the right
to bargain collectively and strike when necessary, are under relentless
assault; and where even our most cherished public services are being
undermined by increasing privatization. It is time to make workers’
voices heard" states Carl Pursey President of the PEI Federation of
Labour.
On November 2 and 3, approximately 100 delegates from 45 affiliated
union locals here on PEI will participate in the PEI Federation of
Labour’s 43rd annual convention at the At the Rodds Charlottetown Hotel.
Daniel Kinsella, National President of National Component, of the
Public Service Alliance of Canada will address the delegates on this year’s theme.
We will also have from the PEI Health Coalition, Mary Boyd who will
speak on Pharmacare. Pharmacare is a proposed national drug care plan
that would be publicly funded and administered, control costs, provide
universal access and ensure the safe and appropriate use of drugs. It
would cover medically necessary drug costs in the same way that
Medicare now covers hospitals and physicians.
Other guest speakers this year will include: CLC Executive
Vice-President, Marie Clarke Walker; United Way Executive Director,
Clair Smith; and the Provincial Minister Responsible for
Labour Carolyn Bertram.
The delegates will be debating 8 resolutions at this year’s convention
on a wide range of topics including:
• Creating a new Provincial Holiday in
February (Family Day),
• lobbying MP’s to establish Pharmacare
(national drug care plan),
• establishing a dedicated Passport
Office for the Island,
• increasing the Provincial minimum wage
to $10/hr by 2010,
• an education campaign on the harm that
Atlantica poses to our communities and workforce,
• opposing the privatization of federal
buildings and municipal infrastructure projects and the establishment
of a new federal office to peddle P3's,
• restoring funding for literacy programs
• and opposing the Security and
Prosperity Partnership
On the election front, our Vice President, Treasurer, and VP (woman)
positions will all be up for election at this year’s convention.
