On November 4 and 5, the PEI
Federation of Labour will hold its 41st annual convention at the Howard
Johnson’s Dutch Inn in North River.
The theme of this year’s convention is Our World, Our Struggle and in
keeping with that theme the federation has invited Karl Flecker of the
Polaris Institute to conduct a workshop on Globalization and the
federation will be holding a sweatshop fashion show.
Other guest speakers this year will include: CLC Executive Vice
President, Marie Clark Walker; NDP President, James Rodd; Mark Greenan,
Co-ordinator of the Yes on MPP Coalition; Eileen Leclair, Silent
Witness Project; and Minister responsible for Labour Elmer Macfadyen.
We are expecting approximately 100 delegates at this year’s convention
from our 45 affiliated union locals here on PEI.
The delegates will be debating 13 resolutions at this year’s convention
on a wide range of topics including: Child Care, two-tier minimum wage,
immigration, poverty, temporary foreign workers in the construction
industry, the plebiscite on electoral reform, overtime exemptions in
the Employment Standards Act, globalization, adding another statutory
holiday, removal of WCB’s 3 day waiting period, replacement of the
Holiday Island, removal of severance pay as a collateral benefit in the
WCB Act, and appointments to the Labour Relations Board.
On the election front, our Vice President, Treasurer, and VP
(woman) positions will all be up for election at this year’s convention.
Also on the agenda, we will be updating the delegates on the status of
the Monument honouring all workers who have been injured or have died
on Island worksites that we are trying to establish on land around the
Coles Building in Charlottetown.
