Charlottetown, PE... On April 28/08 the PEI Federation of Labour will hold its seventh annual provincial Day of Mourning ceremony for workers who have been killed or injured on the job at Province House at 7:00 p.m.  A reception will follow provided by the Province - the public is invited.

We will come together to honour their memory, mourn their loss and dedicate ourselves anew to improve workplace health and safety.  This year’s theme is “Mourn the Dead, Fight for the Living - Now more than ever.”

We will re-dedicate ourselves to work harder with renewed vigour to try and gain enforcement of existing occupational health and safety laws.  Improving workplace safety will remain our number one priority.  Whether a worker belongs to a union or not, it is incumbent upon every worker to look out for themselves and their peers so that no one suffers an injury on the job or loses their lives.  Having said that, such responsibility does not solely lie with workers either.  Provincial Government, employers and unions all have a role to play in ensuring the safety of our workforce.  As a labour movement we denounce those who place profit before workers health and safety.  We want to see enforcement of penalties for all infractions of occupational health and safety legislation.

Employers and workers must know that creating an unsafe work environment will not be tolerated in P.E.I.   It is all our responsibility to ensure safe working conditions not only now but in the future.  We must learn ourselves and put into practice what we’ve learned so we can educate the next generation of Island workers.

“On this day our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those whom lost their lives on the job.  We mourn their loss.  We will continue to fight for the living - now more than ever.”
