Report on the Federation’s 2007 International Women’s Day Event
On Thursday, March 8, the Federation’s Women’s
Committee held an International Women’s Day Event during the
lunch break of our March educational at the Murphy's Community
Center(former Basilica Rec Center) in Charlottetown. The event was
well attended with approximately 50 people attending.
The first guest speaker at this year’s event was Donalda
MacDonald President of CUPE’s PEI Division who spoke on the
impact of the Harper government’s $5 million cut to and
change to the terms and conditions for the operation of the Status of
Women Canada, their cancellation of the Early Learning and Child
Care agreements and the elimination of the Court Challenges
Program on Women across Canada.
Next to speak was Alejandrina Ibanez, a Bolivian Social Activist who is
on an International Women’s Day 07 Maritime Tour organized
by CUSO Atlantic and CUPE’s Global Justice Fund. Ms. Ibanez
spoke, through her interpreter, about the struggles she has faced
in her native Bolivia as a Social Activist.
Finally CLC representative Jean Claude Basque spoke to the audience
about the status of Bill C-257 Anti-Scab Legislation and the need
for labour to get behind this important piece of Legislation.
Federation Secretary Bev MacLean acted as emcee for the event.
The Federation would like to thank Federation Secretary Bev
MacLean, our VP(women) Linda Dokendorff, the guest speakers, and
everyone else that put so much effort into making the event the
success it was.
