Report on the Federation’s 2007 International Women’s Day Event

On Thursday, March 8, the Federation’s Women’s Committee held an International Women’s Day Event during the lunch break of our March educational at the Murphy's Community Center(former Basilica Rec Center) in Charlottetown. The event was well attended with approximately 50 people attending.

The first guest speaker at this year’s event was Donalda MacDonald President of CUPE’s PEI Division who spoke on the impact of the Harper government’s $5 million cut to and change to the terms and conditions for the operation of the Status of Women Canada, their cancellation of the Early Learning and Child Care agreements and the elimination of the  Court Challenges Program on Women across Canada.

Next to speak was Alejandrina Ibanez, a Bolivian Social Activist who is on an International Women’s Day 07 Maritime Tour organized by CUSO Atlantic and CUPE’s Global Justice Fund. Ms. Ibanez spoke, through her interpreter, about the struggles she has faced in her native Bolivia as a Social Activist.

Finally CLC representative Jean Claude Basque spoke to the audience about the status of Bill C-257 Anti-Scab Legislation and the need for labour to get behind this important piece of Legislation. Federation Secretary Bev MacLean acted as emcee for the event.

The Federation would like to thank Federation Secretary Bev MacLean, our VP(women) Linda Dokendorff, the guest speakers, and everyone else that put so much effort into making the event the success it was.
