On November 4 and 5, the PEI Federation of Labour held its 41st annual convention at the Howard Johnson’s Dutch Inn in North River. There were 90 delegates at this year’s convention from our 45 affiliated union locals here on PEI.

The theme of this year’s convention was Our World, Our Struggle and in keeping with that theme the federation invited Karl Flecker of the Polaris Institute to conduct a workshop on Globalization and also held a sweatshop fashion show.

Other guest speakers this year included: CLC Executive Vice President, Marie Clark Walker; Doreen Wall(CUPE) who spoke on the East Coast Education Tour of Columbian Trade Union workers and the Labour College of Canada Alumni; Mark Greenan, Co-ordinator of the Yes on MPP Coalition; Eileen Leclair (UPSE), Silent Witness Project; and Minister responsible for Labour Elmer Macfadyen.

The delegates debated and accepted 14 resolutions at this year’s convention on a wide range of topics including: Child Care, two-tier minimum wage, immigration, poverty, temporary foreign workers in the construction industry, the plebiscite on electoral reform, overtime exemptions in the Employment Standards Act, globalization, adding another statutory holiday, removal of WCB’s 3 day waiting period, replacement of the Holiday Island ferry, removal of severance pay as a collateral benefit in the WCB Act,
appointments to the Labour Relations Board, and the closure of the mail sorting plant in Quebec City and proposed closures in other locations

On the election front, Blair Penny (IBEW) and Chris Vessey ( PSAC) were re-elected by acclamation Vice President and  Treasurer respectively, and Linda Dockendorff (UPSE) was voted in to the VP (woman) position.
